Yesterday, the 49th Annual Northern California Area Emmy® Award Nominations were announced. The Emmy® award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), and these include both national and regional awards. The San Francisco/ Northern California regional chapter is composed of media companies and individuals from Northern California, Nevada, and Hawaii. The complete press release can be found here.
Among those Hawai‘i-based nominations was a short film, In Prose & Palms, made last summer for Halekulani Living TV by Nella Media Group of Honolulu. The film, shot entirely on the grounds of The Merwin Conservancy, in the garden and home of W.S. Merwin and Paula Merwin, tells the story of their legacy and features our executive director, Sonnet Kekilia Coggins.
Specifically, this nomination is in the “Short Format Program” category, and the filmmakers nominated include:
- Jason Cutinella, Producer
- Gerard Elmore, Director
- Kyle Kosaki, Director of Photography
- Shaneika Aguilar, Editor
The Merwin Conservancy is grateful to these talented filmmakers for so beautifully telling our story, and to Halekulani for commissioning this short film to air on Halekulani Living TV, their in-suite television channel and online platform. We wish them all much luck at the upcoming awards ceremony, which will be streamed online at www.emmysf.tv on Saturday, June 6th at 7:00PM PST.

The film has a beautiful message about the stewardship of any patch of land, and its many rewards. Above all, the film shows us the wonderful nature and spirit of trees!

Thanks for the lovely comment, Daniel. We agree that the message, inspired by W.S. Merwin and Paula Merwin’s life together, is quite beautiful. We are lucky to have the responsibility and privilege to carry that message forward.
