Join the Centenary Circle

As we step toward William’s 100th birthday in 2027, we are creating The Centenary Circle—a fundraising effort to ensure that the expression of William and Paula Merwin’s vision continues to grow, evolve, and thrive under our collective care.

Through a three-year major gift commitment in 2025, 2026, and 2027, Centenary Circle members invest in the future of The Merwin Conservancy and its programs.

Centenary Circle members will be invited to special commemorative events we are planning in Hawai’i and across the country in the centenary year, including a gathering here in Peʻahi to plant a native palm or understory plant—our first gesture toward the expansion of the garden into the 8 acres William and Paula didn’t reach in their lifetimes.

Please contact Sonnet Coggins, Executive Director, to learn more.

Help us Grow Our Endowment

When William and Paula Merwin founded The Merwin Conservancy in 2010, they set forth a guiding principle: that the organization entrusted with the stewardship of their home and garden have a solid financial foundation to care for it in perpetuity. They specified that a minimum of $1 million be pledged to an endowment fund before stewardship of the house and garden would pass to The Conservancy.

Thanks to the early vision and generosity of the founding board and initial donors, that goal was achieved—paving the way for The Merwin Conservancy to assume stewardship in 2020.

Since then, our endowment has grown considerably. We are now on a path toward reaching our next milestone of $2 million by the end of 2025. This will allow us to initiate a modest annual draw, dedicated solely to the care of the Merwins’ home and palm garden—ensuring the long term care of this place and allowing us to make significant capital improvements.

We remain committed to sustaining this unique place with care—now and long into the future. We invite you to be part of that legacy.

Please contact Sonnet Coggins, Executive Director, to learn more.

The Merwin Legacy Circle

Please consider leaving a planned gift to The Merwin Conservancy through the Merwin Legacy Circle. Your gift will conserve in perpetuity not only a singular place, but also W.S. Merwin and Paula Merwin’s lived and practiced belief in the oneness of imagination and nature.

The Impact of Your Support

Imagine The Merwin Conservancy at its fullest expression:

The palm garden planted by W.S. Merwin across 10 acres is healthy, protected, and evolving—thriving as a living work of art, and a site of sanctuary to all who visit.

Under our care, the garden expands into areas W.S. Merwin left unplanted in his lifetime. Groves of loulu (Pritchardia arecina), the East Maui native palm that once flourished here, fill the canopy alongside other threatened and endangered Maui species.

Existing and envisioned structures support expanded onsite programming and greater public access. These improvements will allow us to scale our impact while preserving the quiet intimacy of this special place—honoring both the carrying capacity of the land and the tenets of our conservation easement.

The story of this place continues to unfold around the world—through storytelling, virtual and offsite programs, partnerships, and collaborative projects, as well as through the imaginations and actions of all those who carry forward its values in the places they love.

Together, we can make this vision a reality. Make a gift to support our work.
