“One Day Moth” by W.S. Merwin

The lingering late-afternoon light of autumn
waves long wands through the arches
of fronds that meet over the lane
the bright rays dance in the shadow
and a giant moth like a waving hand
of gray velvet unfolds and dances among them
one moment of dappled brightness
and the next another darkness
surfing the shadows now
this shadow in the curve of the lane
that I have known through these years
the place of parting and of returning
