A 90th Birthday Tribute to W.S. Merwin in The Green Room

September 29, 2017 By Merwin Conservancy

Attendees gather at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center to celebrate

Friday, September 29, 2017 at Maui Arts and Cultural Center, , McCoy Studio Theater

A very special installment of The Merwin Conservancy’s “Green Room” series in celebration of W.S. Merwin’s 90th birthday, featured poet Edward Hirsch and Merwin’s long-time editor, Michael Wiegers, along with other special guests.

On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the Merwin Conservancy presented an evening in tribute to U.S. Poet Laureate, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, translator, environmentalist, and 40-year Maui resident, W.S. Merwin, whose peerless literary gifts have inspired millions and have consistently broken new ground in the world of poetry.

The evening featured a tribute to Merwin and readings of his poetry, led by celebrated poet Edward Hirsch of the Guggenheim Foundation, and Merwin’s longtime editor, Michael Wiegers of Copper Canyon Press. Other special guests and appearances were made as well.

The State of Hawaii was also  present, issuing a Gubernatorial Proclamation proclaiming September 30, 2017, as “W.S. Merwin Day” in Hawaii and presented Merwin with a special Gubernatorial Commendation for his life-long achievements.

This event was generously presented by FIM Group.
