and the inspiration behind the Kaunoa Civic Adventures program
Over the month of July and into early August, the Kaunoa Senior Center‘s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which “provides opportunities for people 55 and better to make a difference in the community through volunteerism” paid a series of stewardship visits to The Merwin Conservancy this month through an ongoing program called “Civic Adventures”.
Participants joined The Merwin Conservancy’s gardening team in removing invasive vines and weeds from areas nearby the renowned Merwin Palm Collection. This is the seventh time that members of the Kaunoa group have volunteered with us in the past two years.
The Civic Adventures program coordinator, Ivey Mitsuyuki, said that “the seniors loved their experience at the Merwin Conservancy Palm Forest! They enjoyed learning about the life pursuits of W.S. Merwin and his vision to dramatically transform a desolate piece of land into a lush, dense palm forest. The seniors were very impressed with the tremendous work that has been done and were eager to “give back” through volunteering.”
