A Peek Inside W.S. Merwin’s Cedar Tea Cabinet

April 28, 2020 By Sonnet Kekilia Coggins

In these early months of stewarding the Merwins’ house, we are making discoveries that surprise and delight us.

The objects, letters, scrap paper notes and old photographs add nuance and depth to our understanding and commitment. As we go, we’ll share some of these finds with you in a new series called “Storied Objects.”

First, we peek inside W.S. Merwin’s cedar tea cabinet, filled with his collection of loose leaf tea in labeled canisters.

In these early months of stewarding the Merwins’ house, we are making discoveries that surprise and delight us, and quite often move us deeply. Drinking tea now with memories of William, I am suddenly awakened to a classic line from Li Bai…

Indeed, William is now and forever, Li Bai’s, “elegant young man, like a jade tree in the breeze.”

Have a cup of tea with us…

I had no idea that natural green tea powder could help reduce stress and lower blood pressure. My wife bought a bunch of natural green tea powder and I had no idea what it could help with. I’m glad that I found your article and I’m going to have to give green tea a try for all of these different uses!
