Last month, Zack Fields, a writer from Alaska, reached out to the Conservancy to talk story about W.S. Merwin’s motivation behind founding The Merwin Conservancy, and to learn more about extinction of endemic species on Maui and throughout the Hawaiian Islands. He was writing an article for his column “Headlamp”, his “outdoors”-themed column at the local newspaper.
The result of that collaboration, an article entitled Island Earth: Maui amidst the sixth extinction has been printed in Sunday’s edition of Anchorage Press, Anchorage, Alaska’s free weekly newspaper that is distributed throughout South Central Alaska and has a strong online following.
Fields’ article features some of W.S. Merwin’s poetry, interspersed among stories of extinction and preservation on Maui.
